Everything You Wanted to Know About Grab Hire

At Bulk Cargo Services, we not only specialise in cargo superintendence, but we also hire out equipment for loading and unloading ships at port. You might be interested to know that grab hire is one of our most popular services and we have more than 50 grabs all around Australia and New Zealand.

The sizes of our grab hire buckets range from 3 to 20 metres. We also have remote and touch grabs with mechanical close and remote releases from a distance of 6 to 10 metres. Our 20 metre grabs are among the largest in the country, capable of unloading a vessel at over 350 tonnes per hour, making discharge quicker and cheaper.

With round the clock maintenance, you can rely on the reliability of our grab hire, and in the unlikely event of a breakdown our maintenance team will be on site ASAP to fix the problem.

At Bulk Cargo, we actually helped to pioneer the bulk cargo industry, having perfected the grab design over 30 years of working in the bulk cargo industry. We are proud of our work and strive to offer the best service possible to our customers.

What’s the difference between a remote controlled and a mechanical grab hire?

At Bulk Cargo we use grabs to load and unload ships, trucks and containers at port, and we can use either a mechanical or a remote controlled grab to complete these operations. Our remote controlled grab hire equipment makes short work of loading and unloading bulk cargo materials from ships. These have a hydraulic system that can work for around 24 hours before needing to be recharged, making them very efficient.

With a remote grab, the operator presses the remote, sending a signal to the grab which activates an electro-magnetic valve and opens and closes the grab scales. These are the best option for working in ports and in confined spaces. On the other hand, our mechanical grab hire equipment is designed to be used with cranes that are usually used to move general cargo, but need to be temporarily adapted to load or unload bulk cargo.

We offer competitive rates for our grab hire, so call us on 07 3621 1777 and we will see what we can do to help you out of a tight spot.
